For this album, the Danish musician teamed up with Charles Lee Shapiro, a kindred spirit, to delve into the forgotten corners of music history, blending garage punk, unhinged rockabilly and raw sonic experimentation. Recorded in a basement, the album retains a raw, spontaneous energy that has always defined the band's approach. The identity of Rip It lies in its controlled chaos and catchy melodies, with each track seeming to possess its own distinct personality. The influences are eclectic yet always digested with a playful, irreverent freedom reminiscent of the obscure compilations of the 60s and 70s. The arrangements, sometimes minimal and sometimes saturated, create striking contrasts between sharp guitar riffs, relentless rhythmic sections and hypnotic synth incursions. Tracks like What's the News and Bad Food and Violence embody this dynamic, with tight riffs and lyrics that oscillate between absurdity and provocation. My Songs, inspired by a Sting tour poster, turns a declaration of ego into a musical joke, where the repetition of the title becomes a comic leitmotif. Leave Me Alone, featuring Greenlandic artist Nive Nielsen, introduces an unexpected political dimension, while the title track Rip It immerses the listener in a synth trance, with guitar lines that seem to dance across the surface of the mind. Rip It stands as a culmination in PowerSolo's discography, a band that has spent three decades defying the conventions of good taste. The album does more than draw from the roots of rock'n'roll; it manhandles, distorts and reinvents them with an almost subversive joy. The result is a record that refuses to stay still, oscillating between cleverness and absurdity, between homage and parody, while retaining a raw energy that reminds us why rock'n'roll remains a living force. The collaboration with Nive Nielsen and the exploration of themes as varied as heartbreak and social satire show that PowerSolo never takes itself too seriously, even as it takes its music very seriously. It is this tension between lightness and commitment that makes Rip It so captivating and unpredictable.
